Program Note

Director Sho Miyake’s Traveling Days is a remarkable work that transforms a creator’s attempt to escape the prison of text into a daring structural experiment. The film’s first half presents, almost in its entirety, a screenplay written by the screenwriter Yi (Shim Eun-kyung). It tells the story of a chance encounter between a young man and woman by a restless summer sea, delicately capturing the uncertainties of youth and the fleeting connections that emerge between strangers.
However, during a post-screening discussion, Yi confesses to a creative slump. The death of a mentor becomes a turning point, prompting her to leave everything behind and embark on a journey of her own. From this moment onward, the film shifts dramatically, immersing the audience in the snow-covered rural landscapes that Yi encounters along the way.
The “film within the film,” once confined by the conventions and expectations of screenwriting, gradually gives way to a world of pure experience. The pacing of both cinematography and editing becomes more relaxed, allowing moments to breathe and unfold naturally. What Yi discovers in this unfamiliar village is not merely a new setting, but a release from the creative obsessions and constraints that have governed her life. In many ways, this liberation reflects a formal pursuit that Miyake has consistently explored throughout his filmography.
More than a film about travel, Traveling Days is an elegant meditation on how the extraordinary can dissolve into the ordinary. Through its subtle shifts in structure and perspective, it demonstrates with remarkable grace how the non-routine experience of a “journey” can ultimately be transformed into the quiet rhythm of everyday life.
