‘조나’(조나 웨스트)는 화려하지만 숨 막히는 도시 런던에서 자기파괴적인 삶을 살고 있다. 난독증과 ADHD로 인한 패배감과 불안감을 난잡한 파티로 해소하던 그는 어느 날, 친구 ‘리’(스탠리 브룩)와 함께 도망치듯 스코틀랜드의 친척 할머니 집으로 향한다. 외롭고 황량한 바닷가에서 조나는 청각장애를 가진 쌍둥이 형제 ‘찰리’(코너 톰킨스)와 ‘루크’(루이스 톰킨스)를 만난다. 처음에는 소통이 쉽지 않지만 언어의 장벽은 곧 허물어지고 조나는 자신의 소외감을 이해해주는 찰리에게 묘한 동질감과 위로를 느낀다.

Jonah (Jonah West) is living a glamorous yet suffocating life in London, caught in a cycle of self-destruction. Struggling with dyslexia, ADHD, and the anxiety and frustration they bring, he numbs himself through chaotic parties and reckless behavior. One day, he escapes the city with his best friend Lee (Stanley Brook), seeking refuge at a relative’s home on the remote northeast coast of Scotland.
There, amid the loneliness and stark beauty of the seaside, Jonah meets Charlie (Conor Tomkins) and Luke (Lewis Tomkins), deaf twin brothers. Communication is awkward at first, but the barriers between them gradually dissolve. In Charlie, Jonah finds someone who understands what it means to feel different, isolated, and misunderstood. Their growing friendship offers him a sense of belonging and comfort he has long been searching for.
The title does not refer to a single individual or relationship. Rather, “The Son” represents an entire generation of young people—each of them someone’s child, navigating their own struggles and uncertainties.
The film’s characters grapple with challenges such as dyslexia, disability, and substance abuse, yet before the vastness of the sea they are able to reveal their vulnerabilities without disguise. Through connection and solidarity, they learn not to overcome their pain, but to carry it together. 스트로마 케언스는 영국의 영화감독으로, 중부 지역에서 보낸 인상적인 1년을 제외하고는 런던에서 태어나고 자랐다. 어린 시절 어머니가 함께 본 영화 <피아노>(The Piano, 1992) 는 그녀의 인생에 큰 영향을 남겼다.
이야기와 영상미, 그리고 음악에 깊이 매료된 그녀는 그 경험을 오래도록 간직해 왔으며, 이후에도 이와 같은 감성의 작품들에 자연스럽게 이끌렸다.
캠던여자학교에서 A-Level 과정을 공부하던 시절,직접 각본을 쓰고 출연하며 편집까지 맡은 첫 단편영화를 제작했다. 이 작품은 그녀가 영화감독으로서의 여정을 시작하는 출발점이 되었다.

She was transfixed by the story, visuals, and music. It stayed with her, and it is to films like this that she has since gravitated. While studying A-Levels at Camden School for Girls, Cairns made her first short film, which she wrote, starred in, and edited herself. It marked the beginning of her journey as a filmmaker.
