Color sometimes explains the world before words ever can. The vivid blues of the Maldives and the murky hues left behind by earthquakes are both signs that the ocean is alive.

For years, photographer Yasuaki Kagii has documented the unique colors of the sea. Yet he reflects that the era of photographing only beautiful oceans may be coming to an end. Plastic debris scattered across the seafloor, marine waste accumulating in coastal waters, and the traces left behind by natural disasters have all reshaped the direction of his work.

What makes this film particularly compelling is that it does not approach environmental issues through didactic arguments or moral instruction. Instead, it is rooted in the belief that the aesthetic choices of a single artist can create a ripple effect, inspiring broader change. At the same time, Kagii’s work is an attempt to reveal the ocean’s true face without embellishment or illusion.
