Left behind at a rundown seaside motel, Na-seong continues to believe that one day her mother will return. The man who exploits that hope leaves a young boy in her care and disappears. Too young to fully grasp the reality of his situation, the child remains innocent and carefree.
Through the boy, Na-seong is forced to confront her own wounds and buried pain. Rather than easing her suffering, the encounter seems to make it ache even more deeply. Yet amid the bleak coastal landscape—a place where redemption appears impossible—the two slowly begin to open their hearts to one another. Their bond defies simple definition: at times they seem like siblings, at others like a mother and son.
The film’s title, New Flesh, may suggest the possibility of beginning again where scars once formed. After all, new skin grows only where wounds have healed. Perhaps it is an expression of the will to move forward despite the pain that came before.
The grotesque atmosphere of the damp, weatherworn seaside motel and the haunting intensity of Na-seong’s gaze linger long after the film ends, holding the viewer in their grip.
