Diligently mending her tewak float and wetsuit, Yang Young-sam is a Jeju haenyeo who prefers the sea to the fields. In the water, she seems to forget her age, moving with a sense of freedom that belongs entirely to the ocean. Each time she dives beneath the surface and rises again, holding her breath until the last possible moment, the distinctive sumbisori—the whistle-like sound of a haenyeo’s exhalation—bursts forth, at once plaintive and crystal clear.

Then comes a new hardship: Alzheimer’s disease. Yet even in the face of fading memories, Young-sam says with quiet certainty, “I’ll go back to the sea tomorrow.” It is impossible not to be moved by her determination.
