동해 어드메에서 배를 몰며 살아가는 남노인은 어느 날 바다 위로 날아가는 미사일과 함께 해변에 떠밀려온 북한 청년 리무호를 발견한다.
코로나로 가족을 잃고 풍랑 끝에 남한까지 흘러온 무호는 코로나 증세를 보이며 남노인과 며칠간 동거한다.

함께 라면을 먹고, 배를 타고, 서로의 두려움과 외로움을누르며 지낸 시간도 잠시, 무호는 결국 경찰에 붙잡혀 북으로 송환된다.
시간이 흐른 뒤, 남노인은 인터뷰 화면 속, 먼 곳을 응시하는 무호의 시선에서 바다 위에서 그에게 들려주었던 자신의 말을 떠올린다. "멀리 봐야 멀미하지 않는다."
<동해>에서 바다는 단순한 배경이 아니라, 분단의 경계와 인간의 자유가 동시에 머무는 공간으로 존재한다.

육지 위에서는 국가와 이념이 사람을 가르지만, 끝없이 펼쳐진 바다 위에서는 오히려 서로가 한 인간으로 마주하게 된다.
이 영화 속 바다는 두려움과 해방감이 공존하는 장소이자, 멀리 바라볼 때에만 비로소 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 삶의 방향처럼 다가온다.

An elderly fisherman who makes his living navigating the waters of Korea’s East Sea discovers a young North Korean man, Ri Mu-ho, washed ashore one day as missiles streak across the sky above the sea. Having lost his family during the COVID-19 pandemic and drifted south after being caught in a storm, Mu-ho shows symptoms of the virus and ends up living with the old fisherman for several days.

They share instant noodles, spend time together at sea, and quietly endure their fears and loneliness side by side. But their fragile companionship is short-lived. Mu-ho is eventually apprehended by the authorities and repatriated to North Korea.

Years later, while watching an interview in which Mu-ho gazes silently into the distance, the old fisherman recalls something he once told him out on the water: “If you look far ahead, you won’t get seasick.”

《Across the Ocean》 the ocean is more than a backdrop. It is a space where the realities of division and the possibility of human freedom coexist. On land, nations and ideologies separate people; at sea, beneath the same horizon, individuals encounter one another simply as human beings. The ocean in this film becomes a place where fear and liberation exist side by side—a metaphor for life itself, suggesting that only by looking beyond the immediate horizon can we find the strength to move forward.
