한반도 동해의 수온은 50년간 2도 상승했다. 지구에서 가장 빠르게 뜨거워지는 바다 중 하나다. 제보를 받은 기자는 취재를 위해 다이빙을 배웠다.
하지만 제보를 넘어 마주한 바다는 그가 알던 것이 아니다. 겉에서 보이는 바다와 전혀 다른 현실, 차가운 물을 터전으로 살아온 한대성 해조류들이 사라진 황량한 해저 속에서 그는 풍요로왔던 과거의 흔적을 찾아보기로 했다.

학자들이 '삼나무말'이라 부르는 그것의 이름은 꽁치풀.
수십 년 전 꽁치를 맨손으로 잡을 때 미끼로 쓰던 그것을 찾기위해 200km 해안선을 따라 북쪽으로, 더 북쪽으로 걷다 DMZ 앞에서 멈춰섰야했다.
기후가 밀어올린 꽁치풀은 이제 북녘 바다에만 살아있다고 한다. 잊혀진 바닷말 꽁치풀을 통해 그가 진정 찾고자 한 것은 무엇이었을까.

The waters of the East Sea surrounding the Korean Peninsula have warmed by 2°C over the past fifty years, making it one of the fastest-warming seas on Earth. Acting on a tip, a journalist learned to dive in order to investigate.

What he discovered beneath the surface, however, was not the sea he thought he knew.

Far removed from the image visible above the waterline, the underwater world revealed a barren seafloor where cold-water seaweeds that had once flourished had all but disappeared. In search of traces of a richer past, he set out to find what had been lost.

Scientists call it Samnammal; local fishermen know it as Ggongchi-pul—“saury grass.” Decades ago, it was commonly used as bait when saury could be caught by hand. To find this forgotten seaweed, he followed more than 200 kilometers of coastline, walking north, then farther north, until his journey came to an abrupt halt at the edge of the DMZ.

Driven northward by a changing climate, Ggongchi-pul is now said to survive only in the waters beyond the border.

Through the search for this forgotten seaweed, what was he truly looking for? A lost species, a vanished sea, or a memory of a world slipping away before our eyes?
