퉁퉁한 몸집에 울퉁불퉁한 돌기가 덮인 이 고래를, 수백 년 전 포경업자들은 '참고래(Right Whale)'라 불렀다. 크고 순해서 사냥하기에 '딱 맞는' 고래라는 뜻이었다. 무자비한 남획 끝에 1920년 번식 가능한 암컷은 단 25마리. 그러나 100년이 지난 지금, 뉴질랜드와 아르헨티나 해안에서는 수백 마리의 어미들이 새끼를 낳는다. 포식자가 들을까 봐 새끼에게 속삭이는 어미 고래. 보존은 효과가 있었다.
하지만 완벽한 회복의 이야기는 남반구에서만이다. 북대서양 참고래는 지금 400마리도 채 남지 않았다.
고래를 위해 카메라를 든 과학자와 변호사 부부 닉과 쉐릴. 영화를 넘어 캠페인으로, 스크린 밖에서도 싸우는 감독들의 두 번째 장편. 진실 외에는 군더더기가 없다.

Covered in rough callosities and wrapped in a massive, lumbering body, this whale was once known by whalers as the “Right Whale” — the whale that was considered the “right” one to hunt because it was large, slow, and easy to kill.
After centuries of relentless exploitation, only 25 breeding females remained by the 1920s. Yet a century later, along the coasts of New Zealand and Argentina, hundreds of mothers now return to give birth to their calves. A mother whale whispers to her young, careful not to attract the attention of predators. Conservation worked.
But this story of recovery belongs only to the Southern Hemisphere. In the North Atlantic, fewer than 400 North Atlantic right whales remain, and their future hangs by a thread.
Armed with cameras instead of harpoons, scientist-lawyer filmmaking duo Nick and Cheryl Dean turn their attention to the plight of one of the world’s most endangered great whales. More than a documentary, the film is part of a larger campaign, extending its fight beyond the screen and into the real world. The directors’ second feature leaves no room for embellishment—only the truth.
